For the first time in the history of the school (nearly 40 years), Phil & Jennie Gaglardi has had a senior boys athletic team. There are only 75 students in grades 8-12 at the school so to field a senior team is an amazing accomplishment. This particular group of young men started to play together as a team in grade 8 with coach Carpenter. All of the team except two are presently in grade 11 with one team member being in grade 10 and one in grade 12.
We have had the good fortune to partner with Ecole au coeur de l'ile to use their beautiful facility and over the years have had some of their boys join us on the team. This year we earned a ranking of number 2 in the North Island. We defeated very strong teams in Duncan and Nanaimo in regular season play. The North Island tournament saw the team lose to our rivals Gold River and earn a third-place standing going into the Island Championships this past weekend in Victoria. The team lost two very close games - one to Duncan Christian (lost by 3 points) and one to St. Andrews school (lost by 6 points). We won our game against Ahousat. The team traveled with only 6 of our regular players. We earned the 6th spot on the Island and unfortunately did not make it to the Provincial Championships. Gaglardi did have a first place all-star member - Jesse Dyble and we earned the Most Sportsmanlike Team. These were amazing accomplishments for our school. Next year with 4 of our 5 starters returning we hope to achieve great results. Huge thanks go out to Maureen Olsen for all her help with the team this year.
