Students from each grade were invited to participate in our annual Speech Meet on May 6, 2021. This meant that for at least 3 weeks before the event, students needed to find and select a poem, piece of prose, or scripture verse to practise and memorize. The librarian, with tears of joy, excitedly talked about poetry books that were "flying" out of the library as students tried to find the perfect poem to recite. Then each classroom had its only "mini-meet" with the teacher judging and selecting three finalists who would go on to compete in the main event.
Finally, the day of the Speech Meet arrived! The Kindergarten students began first and blew away the adjudicators with their recitations. Wow! What a great start! Next came the grade ones, twos, threes,...all the way up to the grade 12 students. There were so many wonderful recitations and performances! The selections chosen ranged from sad to serious or funny to just plain silly and everything else inbetween.
The adjudicators were Mrs Jones, Mrs Johnson, and guest judge, Nathaniel Johnson, who is an alumnus of Gaglardi Academy and has much experience in speech arts and stage performance. Though the task was difficult with so many incredible performances, the judges were able to award students with Certificates of Achievement within their classroom (see list below video). Stay tuned for the Academy Awards where the winners overall in each category - Primary, Intermediate, and High School - will be awarded. "Well done" to all students who participated!
