Grad Class 2019
Phil & Jennie Gaglardi Academy
Congratulations to all our sports teams and coaches! Here are the highlights from our phenomenal volleyball and basketball seasons which led to many pioneering moments for our school.
Our sports teams propelled Phil & Jennie Gaglardi Academy into the spotlight this year! Many sports teams and coaches in the valley and on our island were taken aback by the talent of our athletes. The interest began with our Grade 8/9 girls volleyball team sweeping wins through the Comox Valley, Campbell River, and Powell River teams, and ending victoriously with first place at the North Island Zones Tournament. Check out the plaque in our sports showcase in the main entrance to the school. For the first time in Gaglardi Academy’s history, we had a Grade 9/10 junior boys volleyball team which created quite a stir in the district as the boys defeated many historically superior teams. Well done!
Our students continued to impress as the Grade 9 girls basketball team showcased their talents by winning second place at the North Island Zones Tournament, again creating a buzz about Gaglardi Academy. Our school made its own history with its first ever senior high basketball team comprising of our Grade 10/11 boys. The senior boys’ basketball team played many games as they competed in both the junior and senior leagues. They participated in the Ucluelet and Campbell River tournaments ending the outstanding season by ranking in the top 4 of the North Island League. Awesome!
And not to be outdone by their older peers, the grade 6/7 boys’ basketball team capped off an amazing season by winning the Valley Elementary Championship. They defeated Lake Trail 16-6, Huband 18-12, Puntledge 24-14, and then captured the trophy by edging out Robb Road in the final game, 14-12. The team finished the year undefeated with 15 wins and no losses. Amazing! A big shout-out to parents, coaches, teachers, and Ecole Au Coeur de I’ile School for all the support and encouragement given to the students; you helped make the sports season such a success!

Grab your racquets! The graduating class of Phil & Jennie Gaglardi Academy is hosting a community-wide badminton tournament on Saturday, April 23, in support of their 2016 missions trip to Tabora, Tanzania.
Each year, the Grade 12 class of Gaglardi Academy partners with Juma’s World in Tanzania whose purpose is to transform the lives of children, so that the children of Tanzania may become a generation of leaders who will positively impact their country and their world.
Some of the ways that Juma’s World assists with this is through establishing homes for orphaned children, providing education, setting up microloans for students once they have completed their education, and helping with practical projects such as digging wells and establishing sponsorship programs to bring the necessities of life to children who desperately need it. Above all these things, Juma’s World seeks to build relationships – with local community leadership to assist them in making these things happen, and with the people themselves, particularly children, who need love and compassion to empower them to dream of a future that is hopeful.
To assist the students in raising funds, the school is hosting a badminton tournament for anyone aged 15 and older. Participants will have the opportunity to play at a beginner, intermediate or expert level, and there will be prizes awarded for the best in each category. The early registration fee per team is $50 for registration by April 11. Registrations received after April 11 are $60 per team. Space is limited, so register early!
Play begins at 8:00 AM and runs until 6:00 PM. A concession is available for participants and spectators.
Local businesses may also have the opportunity to support the tournament through sponsorship.
The Gaglardi Academy grade 8 boys basketball team have had an outstanding season. They beat Cumberland Jr. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, in their final league game. Most importantly, every member on the team scored a basket (or two!).
The boys play in the league play-offs this Thursday and Friday, Feb. 25 and 26, at Lake Trail school. Our first game is at 3:15 on Feb. 25. We would love to have some cheerleaders.
Please support our grade 12 students in their fundraising efforts to go to Tanzania this May to assist Juma’s World in their work with orphans. This is a life-changing experience for these students and worth every nickel raised!
The last day to purchase tickets for the Missions 12 fundraiser An Entertaining Fundraising Dinner & Trivia Challenge is Wednesday, Feb. 24. This is a very fun event and one you won’t want to miss. The school office is open until 3:30 pm so you may purchase your tickets when picking up your students.
